John was the eldest of the children born to William and Elizabeth. His name, John James, follows usual naming customs with Irish families, in that John was the name of his paternal grandfather, and James the name of his maternal grandfather. Usually first born sons were given the paternal father’s name with the maternal father’s name as a possible second name. The second born son could be given the maternal father’s name or the name of a paternal uncle.

John and Teresa Anna were married 3 October 1917, in St Marys Church, Glenelg. Teresa was 27 and John was 31 years old. Their fathers are listed as William McBride and John Murphy

John worked with the family in Port Neill building sheds and working on irrigation, and continued in this general line of building when he first arrived in the Riverland. As Cobdogla was the central town before Barmera was proclaimed, John worked on fencing and road construction. Teresa was a teacher and as young governess was sent to Paringa to care for the children of a local family. Her family lived in Camden which is in the West Torrens district, and now known as Camden Park.

John died 14 March 1955, aged 70 years, in Renmark. Teresa died 24 July 1953 - both are buried in Centennial Park Cemetery in Pasadena South Australia (Catholic A, Path AP, Grave 40A)
