PHILLIP JOHN MCBRIDE

 Phillip John McBride was born 2 October 1918 in Camden South Australia. He died 24 September 1943, in New Guinea

Phillip John McBride, son of John James and Theresa, enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force, 18 June 1940 aged 21 years. After initial training, Phillip was assigned to the 2/8 Field Ambulance unit and in 1941 was sent to Palestine. Two years later he was in Sydney on leave and in July 1943, he left Cairns for Milne Bay in New Guinea. The Battle of Milne Bay had taken place 25 August to 7 September 1942, where the Australian troops had pushed back the Japanese and were able to establish a base. From this base they conducted further battles to protect New Guinea and the Pacific. It was into this base that Phillip was sent as a driver. He was wounded in action 23 September 1943, and died the 24th September 1943. Phillip was buried in Bomana, Port Moresby in the Commonwealth War Cemetery.
