Marie attended the St James Falcon Avenue Mile End Primary School, and then the St Peters Collegiate Girls Grammar school. She then went on to teacher training and taught at the Thebarton Girls Technical High School. Her subjects were Commercial studies, English, Social Studies. As a young girl, Marie was very close to Irene Danvers (Sander) and Margaret Rawnsley (McBride).
