As part of his visit to the Riverland in 1939 by Bishop McCabe, the Catholic Debutante Ball was held on Thursday 9 August. Written by John Green:
Jack and Madge lived on and ran a fruit property out from Barmera, the property was originally owned by Frank McBride and for many years Jack also worked at Crowe And Newcombe in Barmera.
Sadly Jack was just 53 when he passed away suddenly in August 1978 ... he was a husband, father and grandfather, a hard worker, he was extremely well respected by all who knew him and my memory of Uncle Jack Richards is that he was a genuine and really decent bloke, his passing was a huge shock and a huge loss ... I believe he was born and raised in Murray Town in the states mid-North and he and brothers Max and Leon all settled in Barmera ...
Madge was born on July 12th 1921 and was the oldest child for Henry and Winnie Danvers ... Madge Richards was simply a gem, an amazing woman who supported Jack and raised her large family without any fuss whatsoever ... a tireless worker she was always involved in the Barmera Catholic Community and loved her footy ... after leaving the fruit block Madge and Jack lived in the Barmera township and then when Jack passed Madge got the travel bug, learned to drive, got a licence and became somewhat of a travelling nomad heading all over the country to visit her family, but she always returned to her home in Barmera ... Madge was 82 when she passed away in December 2003 ...
From Marie McBride
Frank owned the house Madge and Jack lived in, it was part of the block that Frank also ran. The house was a wooden frame, with white washed hessian inside and out to form the lining of the walls. Frank eventually lined the outside with galvanized iron. When Frank died, the brothers and sisters voted to give the house to the Richards’ family, the rest of Frank’s estate was divided between the other brothers and sisters in the family.
Marie remembers Madge having a washing machine with a handle that was turned to wring the clothes. By the time the children were 7 they were tall enough to turn the handle and would help Madge. Madge would spend any spare time knitting, which was not done for pleasure or a hobby but a necessity, in order to provide clothes for the family.
