The Catholic children from Barmera and other towns all had to travel to Berri to Our Lady of the River school. For the students from Barmera, this meant an early morning train ride and then a later evening train ride back home, often not arriving back in Barmera until dark. This was arduous, but many kept up this routine until the trains stopped their regular transport in the early 1940s. Some of the students then would board with a family in Berri, travelling up on the Monday morning and returning to Barmera on the Evening train on a Friday. As these students were still in primary school, this was a difficult time for them, being wrenched from their families throughout the week. It is not surprising they were happy to have their own school! Irene mentions here the building of a new church. I think the new church was finally built around the mid 1960s.
